Why School Uniforms Are Beneficial For Students - 1639 Words

Many schools today seem to be making the switch from no dress code to a dress code or uniform. Dress codes and uniforms continue being implemented in schools and with this comes many benefits, such as less violence, students focusing more on academics, bringing success and positive results to students and teachers, and affordability of school uniforms. Having had a school uniform for most of my academic career, I definitely see the many benefits that come with having a uniform and seeing that the topic of school uniforms is something that is often highlighted in the news and is something that is constantly changing, I believe that this is a topic that needs to be discussed. With the movement of school uniforms in public schools starting not too long ago, there have been many benefits that have come along with it and one of the benefits is that violence in schools has been lowered. School uniforms lower violence levels in schools. Students are less likely to harass or bully each other over what they are wearing, if they are all wearing the same thing (paraphrased from Clinton as cited in Peters Woolley, 1996). When students wear uniforms, it helps them to understand that what is on the inside matters more than what is on the outside (paraphrased from Clinton as cited in Peters Woolley, 1996). President Clinton stated: I believe we should give strong support to school districts that decide to require young students to wear school uniforms. We’ve all seen the tragic headlines screaming of the death of a teenager who was killed for a pair of sneakers or jewelry or a designer jacket. In Detroit, a 15-year-old boy was shot for his $86 basketball shoes. In Fort Lauderdale, a 15-year-old student was robbed of his jewelry.
